Above: The album ledges being glued. The angled groove makes the frame fall against the panel and the outer lip keeps it from sliding off the edge.
Right: The panel nesting operation to define the cutting sequence & sheets required. Done directly from the Rhino model using grasshopper and OpenNest—a great nesting component.
This greatly speeds up the fabrication process. Labels were created & tagged to the panels in place in the model and on the nested panels. |
Originally built in 1952, the house has had a number of additions, changes, renovations, the structure is one lf Layers. The owner, one could say is a man of many layers; personality, tastes, many things going at once. The backdrop is meant to be a field, a fabric of layers . . . Shifting layers with varying grain, texture, patterns, shades. . .
The panels are made of 3 species of plywood: Walnut, Birch, and Maple. The Birch and Maple were found prefinished one side but the Walnut was only available raw & had to be finished with 4 coats of Polycrylic and waxed.
The composition is meant to be dispersed and mostly a uniform field providing a layered, busy backdrop for the uniform spacing, height, and display of the owner’s collection of lp albums and their covers. The idea is that they can be changed out easily and so the frames are set on a ledge designed with an angled groove so the frames will not fall over and will naturally want to fall against the panel wall. This way swapping records & albums is as easy as pulling a book off of a shelf. |
